The Sultan of Kedah Dies

Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman (1958-2017)

At 2.30 pm, on 11th September 2017 – the Sultan of Kedah – Sultan Abdul Halim Muazzam Shah died, after ruling for 59 years on the Kedah throne. Almarhum was the immediate predecessor of the present Yang Dipertuan Agong who had his first official birthday observed by the whole nation 2 days earlier.

Several interesting facts about Almarhum:

1. He was the first Ruler to be formally installed after the Federation of Malaya gained independence.

2. At the point of installation as the Sultan of Kedah in 1958, he was the youngest ruler in Malaya compared to the other 8 Malay rulers then.

3. He was the only ruler in Malaysia who was elected as the Yang Dipertuan Agong twice and completed both terms in office (1970-1975 and 2011-2016)

4. Before his death, he was the 4th longest ruling monarch in the world.
